Cabinets are the most visible — and most expensive — surface in a kitchen remodel. The question of refacing versus full replacement comes up in almost every consultation. Here is how we think about it.
When refacing is the right call
Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes and replaces only the doors, drawer fronts, hardware and finishes. It is the right move when:
- The cabinet boxes are solid and well-built (typically older homes have higher quality boxes than newer construction)
- The layout works and you do not want to change it
- You want a refreshed look without a full demo
- Budget or timeline rules out a full remodel
Refacing is roughly 30-50% of the cost of full replacement and finishes in days, not weeks.
When replacement is the right call
Full replacement makes sense when:
- You want to change the kitchen layout (move the sink, add an island, expand the pantry)
- The cabinet boxes are damaged, warped, or particle-board low quality
- You want custom heights, depths, or integrated appliances
- You are doing a larger renovation that includes plumbing, electrical or structural changes
Our hybrid approach
Many of our Austin projects use refacing on perimeter cabinets and new custom build on the island. This keeps the budget reasonable while still allowing for the bold architectural moves a true remodel calls for.
