Drywall
Repairs, patches and smooth finishes that disappear once the paint is on.
Repairs you stop noticing
Drywall repair is easy to do badly and hard to do invisibly. ATX Renovations repairs and finishes drywall for Austin-area homes, from small holes to large sections damaged by water, and prepares the surface so the paint looks right.

Why finish matters
Drywall problems tend to reveal themselves at the wrong time: when a hallway window sends light across the wall, or when fresh paint dries and shows every patch. Good finishing is about making seams, fasteners and repairs disappear under that kind of light.
We approach repair as a process of removing the cause, restoring the structure of the wall or ceiling and then finishing the surface to match its surroundings. Skipping any of those steps is why patches come back.

Common repairs
These are the situations we see most often in Austin-area homes.
Sections affected by a leak, plumbing issue or roof problem. The source of the moisture must be fixed first, and damaged or wet material removed before new drywall goes in.
Hairline cracks, seam cracks and cracks near doors and windows. We look for why they formed so the repair holds up, since house movement can cause cracks to return.
Everything from anchor holes to doorknob impacts to larger openings left by removed fixtures, patched and blended into the wall.
Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel and other textures can be matched to the surrounding surface so the repair does not stand out.
Patches after leaks, access openings or electrical work, finished so the ceiling reads as one continuous surface.
New and modified walls from framing changes, removed walls or relocated openings, hung, taped and finished.
Finish levels
Drywall finishing is commonly described in levels, from basic taping up to a Level 5 finish, which adds a thin skim coat across the entire surface. A higher level creates a smoother, more uniform wall and is often worth considering where lighting is strong, where paint has a sheen, or where you want a very clean modern look. It also takes more time and cost, so it is a decision to make deliberately.
For many rooms, a lower level of finish with good priming and flat paint is perfectly appropriate. We talk through which level suits each room and the finish you plan to apply, so you pay for smoothness where it will actually show.
How we work
We inspect the damage, ask what caused it and note any signs of ongoing moisture or movement.
We agree on the scope, which areas need replacement versus patching and what finish level and texture match you need.
We schedule the work around other trades and confirm paint plans, so repairs are not done twice.
Damaged material is removed and replaced, joints are taped, compound is applied in coats and sanded, and texture is applied where required. We protect the surrounding rooms from dust.
We walk the repaired areas with you under different light, then the surface is primed and ready for paint.
Before you paint
A repair that is perfectly smooth can still show through paint if it is not primed correctly. Joint compound and bare drywall absorb paint differently, which leads to dull spots called flashing. Proper priming evens out that difference so the final coat looks consistent.
We coordinate priming, patching and final coats so they happen in the right order. If water was involved, we also discuss whether a stain-blocking primer is appropriate once the area has fully dried.
Questions
Yes, once the source of the water has been fixed and the area is dry. Wet or damaged drywall and insulation generally need to be removed, and we can point out when a plumber, roofer or other specialist should be involved first. If mold is suspected, a qualified specialist should assess it.
Often because the wall is moving or the seam was not reinforced properly. Seasonal changes, settling and framing movement can all cause cracking in Central Texas homes. We look at the pattern and use proper taping methods, though we cannot promise a crack will never return if the structure is still moving.
In most cases we can come close to matching common textures such as knockdown or orange peel. Matching is easier when we can see the surrounding wall, and results depend on the existing texture and paint.
It is the highest standard drywall finish level, in which a thin coating is applied over the whole wall to create a very uniform surface. It is most useful under strong side lighting or glossier paint.
Not always, but often the best result comes from painting the entire wall or room, since new paint can look different from older paint. We can talk through the options for your situation.
