Case study, Austin
Stained wood cabinets, a dark green tile wall and brass details in an open Austin kitchen.
The project
This Austin kitchen sets warm stained-wood cabinets against a tall wall of dark green glazed tile. White counters, stainless appliances and brass hardware keep the palette simple and the room open to the living area.

Project overview
ATX Renovations remodeled this kitchen in Austin. The design relies on wood cabinets for warmth and one bold wall of green tile above the range for contrast.
The kitchen opens to the living room through a wide arched opening, so the island and the tile wall are both visible from the next room.
Scope of work
These are the elements visible in the completed kitchen.
Stained wood cabinets with visible grain run along the range wall and around a built-in microwave and wall oven, with a tall cabinet above the refrigerator.
Glossy dark green vertical tile rises behind the range and hood, with a white floating shelf below it for everyday items.
A stainless range sits between wood drawer bases, under a stainless chimney-style hood.
An island with a dark green base and a white top has metal legs at one end, and sits between the cooking wall and the open living room.
A stainless undermount sink on a white counter has a brass pull-down faucet, with a stainless dishwasher beside it.
Slim brass pulls on the drawers and small round brass knobs on the uppers, with recessed ceiling lights and light under the cabinets.
Materials and design details
The tile is a deep green with a glossy, slightly uneven glaze, laid vertically. The surface catches light differently across the wall, which gives a flat backsplash more depth. Beneath the tile, the wall and shelf are plain white.
The wood has a medium, reddish-brown tone with a visible open grain. Brass is used sparingly, on the faucet, pulls and knobs, so it works as detail rather than a theme.
White counters and white walls separate the wood and the green, and stainless steel on the refrigerator, range, hood and oven stack ties the cooking side together. The floor is a warm beige ceramic tile.
Planning a wood kitchen
A strong tile color works best when the rest of the palette stays simple. Here it is white, wood and stainless around the green. When you plan a kitchen like this, we review samples together and document material selections before ordering.
